Psychobiology of Cognition and Positive Traits in Aging

What does this study involve? 

This study is spread out over two days and takes approximately 8 hours.

These visits include:

Visit 1:

  • Consenting to the study.
  • A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan that will take approximately 1.0 hours.
  • computerized task of empathy and post-fMRI interview.

Visit 2:

  • Having your blood drawn by a nurse for use in examining blood-based biomarkers.
  • 2.5 hours of paper-and-pencil and computerized tasks testing things like memory, how well you pay attention.
  • 1 hour of completing surveys asking you about things such as your empathy, happiness, and well-being.
  • 1 hour interview asking you to talk about specific aspects of empathy, compassion, and other positive psychological traits.



Eligibility requirements

  • Previous participation in Dr. Dilip Jeste’s Successful Aging (SAGE) study
  • Right handed
  • Age: 60 years of age and older
  • MRI eligible

Participants will NOT qualify for the study if they have:

  • ever been unconscious for more than 30 minutes
  • history of neurological diseases (like epilepsy or migraines)
  • diabetes or high blood pressure that is not controlled
  • a conservator
  • ineligibility for MRI scanning (for example: claustrophobia, metal implants, pacemaker)
Compensation 

Visit 1:

  • $45
  • If interested, participants may keep an image of their brain

Visit 2:

  • $40
  • Breakfast and lunch are provided
